Be sure to check out my Air Fryer Chicken Wings are the perfect food to pair up with this onion recipe! I’m not joking when I say that this is a perfect topping for game day foods or a great recipe to share with family and friends. I think that onions get a bad wrap. Sure, they may give some less than stellar breath, but the flavor of onions is really quite delicious. I’m a fan of sweet onions and yellow onions, but to be honest, I’ll never turn down any type of large sweet onion that’s tempting me. And if that temptation happens to be a pile of homemade onion rings or fried onion petals, forget about it - that pile is going to be gone asap! The great part about frying foods with less oil is that the flavor really stands out. The outer layer crisp of the onions has the perfect texture that proves that cooking in the air fryer truly is the best method for this dish. When it comes to air frying sliced onions, you’re really going to love how fast and easy it is to make perfectly crispy onions in less time than any other cooking method.

Easy Air Fryer Sauteed Onions

Cooking these onions will give you a few different thoughts and textures. Some may think that they’re more like sauteed onions, while others might compare them to caramelized onions. The trick when you air fry onions is that the texture really depends on how you slice them. Thin slices will tend to be a bit crisper than thicker slices because they’re going to cook that much faster. The thicker slices of onions have more “liquid” in them, which will help them to have that sautéed onions texture that we’ve all grown to love. Once you realize that this easy side dish can be paired with anything from hamburgers to hot dogs to a topping on your nachos, you’re going to be making this recipe a lot of times to find the best way that works for your wants! Use this recipe to try a different kind of onion each time as well. The variety and change in the flavors is my main reason for coming back to this recipe time and time again.

How To Cook Onions in the Air Fryer

NOTE: This recipe was made using a basket style 5.8 qt air fryer. If you’re using a different brand of air fryer, you may need to adjust the time and temperature according to the type of air fryer you have.

Variations

You can easily change this recipe to homemade air fryer onion rings! All you need is some large eggs, some panko breadcrumbs, and a large onion, and you can slice, dip, and fry! If you’re wondering what raw onion to choose, know that red onions are always a sweet choice! Vidalia onions are a great choice, too, and they have great flavor and taste. If you want to flour the onions, you can. Just be sure that you shake off any excess flour before adding them to the air fryer. I like to use all-purpose flour when cooking, but that is totally up to you. To dip the white onions that you’ve cut, add some egg to a shallow bowl and some flour to a different bowl, then dip and add to the air fryer basket. Adding an onion dipping sauce is a great way to add a ton of awesome flavor. I love to dip my onions in ranch!

How do you make an air fryer blooming onion?

If you’ve ever been to Outback Steakhouse, you’re all too familiar with their famous blooming onion. (It’s good - I get it!) To replicate that with your air fryer, you need to have a good flour mixture and egg mixture that you can dip your cut onion into. As long as the onion isn’t too big, you should be able to put it into your air fryer to cook.

What seasonings pair well with an onion?

That’s the great thing about cooking with onions. All seasonings are great. If you like heat, adding cayenne pepper is fast and simple to do. You can also sprinkle on some onion powder and garlic powder as well. If you want to add a bit of saltiness to your onions, you can add some soy sauce or even some Worcestershire sauce as well. Just be careful - those two flavors go a really long way, and a little bit adds a lot!

Should you cut onions on a cutting board?

I always use a plastic cutting board when I’m cutting onions so that the smell doesn’t soak in. Wooden cutting boards tend to hold the scent, so keep that in mind as you’re cutting.

How to store leftovers

If you make a large enough batch of onions, you’ll have some leftover for the next day. Just keep them stored in a small bowl with a lid or in an airtight container. You can easily reheat and eat or pair with an omelet in the morning. You’re going to love the flavor of this simple onion recipe! After one bite, you’ll be able to see why it’s one of my favorite air fryer recipes! More Air Fryer Recipes:
