Fajitas are a staple in my home. How can they not be? They’re tasty, nutritious, and so much fun to eat. While I do love the fajitas from my favorite restaurant, nothing beats homemade. They’re easier on the wallet, and you can go crazy with the toppings. It’s a win-win! Let’s be honest, with fajitas, the fixings mean everything. Toppings make the meal! If you’re wondering what toppings will take your fajitas from dull to delightful, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve rounded up the top 10 toppings that you need to add to that dinner spread. From meats to veggies to sauces, I’ve got you covered. Take your fajitas to the next level with these fantastic toppings. Let’s get this show on the road, shall we?
1. Chicken
Fajitas aren’t fajitas without the meat. There’s a simple reason chicken fajitas are one of the most well-loved Mexican snacks out there. They’re so good, and they’re healthy, too! You can use chicken breasts or thighs for fajitas. The important thing is to season them perfectly. Tender and juicy chicken with all the right flavors? Ahh, that’s the stuff. For a fun twist, make your own taco seasoning at home instead of buying a packet. It’s not hard to make at all! It’s just a mixture of chili powder, cayenne pepper, paprika, cumin, oregano, garlic salt, salt, and pepper.
2. Steak
There’s nothing like thin slices of fork-tender, melt-in-your-mouth steak in a fajita. Just the thought of it is making me hungry! With perfectly cooked and seasoned steak, you’ll have fajitas so good, they’ll taste like they’re from a restaurant. It doesn’t matter if you use flank, skirt, or hangar steak as long as it’s fresh. Trust me, you’ll taste the difference. Season your steak with chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic, salt, and pepper for the perfect fajita flavor. People commonly use the grill to cook steak, but a cast-iron skillet works just as well. If it’s good enough for Gordon Ramsay, it’s good enough for me.
3. Cheese
Cheese may be number 3 on this list, but in my heart, it reigns supreme. It’s wonderful both in fajitas and in life. You can opt for the good-old Cheddar cheese, but Tex Mex cheese will take your fajitas over the top. Medium cheddar, Monterey Jack with jalapeno, and white Monterey Jack – all that cheesy goodness in one bag!
4. Salsa
Salsa is all the sauce you need for fajitas. Sweet and savory with a little kick, it’s the greatest addition to any Tex-Mex treat. If you’ve always used store-bought salsa for your Mexican fiestas, I suggest you make your own this time. I promise you, it’s so easy and so much better! Plus, you can make it according to your preferences: smooth or chunky, mild or spicy. All you need are fresh tomatoes, onions, red and yellow bell peppers, cilantro, lime juice, and salt. Easy-peasy!
5. Guacamole
It’s rich, it’s creamy, it’s healthy, it’s guacamole! I cannot get enough of this green dip. It’s just the most addictive thing! Since my family and friends agree with me, guacamole is typically the first to disappear at our Tex-Mex parties. Guacamole is so easy to make. Here’s how: Mash avocados, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and jalapenos; and season with lemon juice, salt, and pepper. That’s it!
6. Sour Cream
It’s cold, it’s creamy, it’s exactly what you need when things get too hot and spicy. If you’re like me and prefer fajitas rich and umami, sour cream is a must. It adds a zesty component to the dish, as well! It’s a lovely flavor contrast to your savory fajitas.
7. Bell Peppers
Bell peppers are another must-have for this tasty Tex-Mex dish. Fajitas aren’t the same without them! Apart from the flavor, who can resist those bright and vivid colors? Red, green, orange, and yellow bell peppers make your fajitas look like a fun pinata! So appetizing and Instagram-worthy. To make your peppers even more irresistible, marinate them in the same sauce you used with the meat. They will soak up the flavors beautifully. Saute them for 3-4 minutes, and they’re ready.
8. Onions
The smell of fresh onions sauteing in oil or butter is one of my simple joys. There’s just something about it that makes my heart skip a beat. To make onions tastes even better, give them a nice char on the griddle. Allow them to cook for several minutes until they caramelize in their own sugar. They may be simple, but they’re so good!
9. Lettuce
Shredded lettuce is another common fajita topping. It adds a pop of color and makes you feel like you’re about to eat something healthy. It’s the perfect excuse to eat as much as you want. 🙂 It’s also ideal if you’re trying to cut back on calories. Have you tried using lettuce wraps instead of tortillas? They’re surprisingly good and add a really nice crunch to the dish! Try it!
10. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are delicious just the way they are, but roasting them makes them even better and sweeter! This is perfect for when you’re using steak for your fajitas because all you have to do is to roast the tomatoes in the oven along with the steak. Click on a star to rate it!
